MARK HINTON - PRINCIPAL

Mark Hinton joined the firm from a Hamilton practice in 1989. Based in our Carterton office, he visits Masterton on Thursday. Mark’s main practice areas are property law for domestic, farming and business clients with an added emphasis on resource management and local government law. Mark is responsible for the firm’s technology requirements. He is is also a member of the Law Alliance New Zealand IT Committee.

For some time now Mark has also been a member of the New Zealand Law Society’s Land Titles Committee, which has worked in partnership with other stakeholders in developing, initiating  and now upgrading the Land Information New Zealand’s “Landonline” project, which continues to be a world leading digitalised land registration system.

Mark is married to Maria, who is a private Speech and Drama teacher and examiner. They have three adult children. Outside the office, Mark has an interest – along with others in the firm - in a coastal sheep/beef farm, in aviation, and plays an active role in live theatre, both on stage and technical.

KEITH MCCLURE - PRINCIPAL

Keith McClure has been a principal in the firm since 1978, and works out of our Carterton office, visiting Featherston on Wednesday afternoons. His areas of practice include property and commercial work, trusts and asset planning, employment law, and civil litigation. He is on the panel of Family Court lawyers available for Lawyer for Child appointment. Particular projects have included advising on formation of syndicated rural property investments.

Keith is married to Adrienne, a schoolteacher, and has two adult children. His outside interests include farming, skiing, tennis, flying, fishing and art collection.

JOCK BLATHWAYT - ASSOCIATE

Jock Blathwayt is an associate of the firm and has been the mainstay of the firm’s Court practice for many years. He is based in our Carterton office, but spends a lot of time in Court at Masterton, Wellington and Palmerston North. He specialises in criminal proceedings, family work and litigation at all levels including the Court of Appeal.

Jock has three adult children, one of whom is a lawyer. His outside interests include golf, bridge and tennis and he enjoys spending time with his six grandchildren.

VIRGINIA PEARSON - SOLICITOR

Virginia is a staff solicitor in the Carterton office. She graduated from Victoria University in 2005 and worked for the Family Court for two years before joining the firm in 2008. Virginia's predominant areas of practice include family law, criminal and youth law, although she also works closely with others in the firm in areas of general practice.

Virginia has lived in the Wairarapa for more than 20 years. Outside work she is kept busy with her family, and enjoys travelling and music.

JOHN GIBBONS - PRACTICE MANAGER

John joined WCM Legal in 2015 having previously worked in the area of law office administration for over 35 years. John is responsible for the day to day management of the firm including:

  • Marketing and promotion

Away from work John’s interests include walking, golf and following sport, especially motorsport and rugby.

MICHAEL BALE - PRINCIPAL

Michael Bale has been practising all aspects of business and commercial law, dispute resolution, franchising, and conveyancing law since 1995 at Wilson & Co (12 years) and at other Wellington based commercial legal practices. Michael is based in our Wellington and Greytown Offices. Michael’s strengths are in all aspects of business and commercial law and dispute resolution including franchising, leases, conveyancing and subdivision, and corporate advice on commercial matters.

Michael is married to Joke (pronounced “Yorka” – she is from Belgium) and they live in Greytown with their three young children. Michael’s interests include gardening and mechanical work, especially old motorcycles, particularly if they have sidecars.

KIRSTEN TOWNSLEY - PRINCIPAL

Kirsten joined the Firm of Wilson & Co in 2001 from a previous position with the Official Assignee in Wellington. Kirsten became a principal at Wilson & Co in 2009 and specialises in commercial, banking and securities law, all aspects of land law and drafting and advising on commercial agreements of all types.

Kirsten has advised on numerous large corporate acquisitions of land and business assets.

Kirsten is married to Clark and they have twin daughters Paige and Samantha. She loves the outdoors spending her free time mountain biking, cycling, swimming, surfing, and has recently started training for her first Ironman event.

Kirsten is based in our Wellington Office.

JO MCDONALD - ASSOCIATE & SENIOR LEGAL EXECUTIVE

Jo joined the team at WCM Legal in October of 2013. Jo is a fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives and has over twenty years experience in commercial and residential property acquisitions and disposals, banking and securities law, leasing, and contract negotiations. Jo is based in both our Greytown and Wellington offices. 

Outside of work Jo spends time establishing the rural properties she owns with her partner in Upper Hutt and Martinborough. Jo loves cuisine, cooking, wine and reading.

Jo works from both our Wellington and Greytown offices.

DESIREE HARVEY - ASSOCIATE

Desiree joined the firm of WCM Legal in 2010 after gaining experience at another Wellington legal practice. Desiree specialises in transactional aspects of land law, business sales and purchases and insolvency, as well as drafting and advising on commercial contracts of all types. She enjoys working closely with her clients to achieve positive results.

Desiree and her husband Matt live in Wellington and she is based at our Wellington Office.

John Goddard - Associate

John joined our team in 2018 from another Wellington law firm. He was admitted to the bar in 2010 and has worked as a barrister and solicitor in a number of roles since then.  John deals with all aspects of civil litigation and alternative dispute resolution.  In particular he specialises in disputes concerning construction, employment & insurance law (including earthquake claims arising from both the Canterbury and Kaikoura earthquakes). 

In Christchurch, John worked as Supervising Solicitor for the Residential Advisory Service and therefore provides a focus on resolving earthquake claims, alternative dispute resolution and civil litigation for the firm. John is eager to engage with clients and offer mentoring to more junior members of the office.  John is Treasurer of the New Zealand Labour Law Society and an associate member of AMINZ.

Outside of work, John enjoys playing tennis and spending time with his family. John is based in our Wellington Office.

JUHA KIM - SOlicitor

Juha is a solicitor based in our Wellington office. He joined WCM Legal as a law clerk in 2016 while completing his LLB and Bcom degree at Victoria University of Wellington. Juha assists the WCM Legal partners on a range of legal matters, with a focus on litigation, property and employment.

Outside of work, Juha volunteers as a basketball coach for Special Olympics Wellington. He is a fan of anything NBA related, enjoys being active and socialising with friends.

KATELYN GEORGE - REGISTERED LEGAL EXECUTIVE

Katelyn has worked as a Registered Legal Executive in the Wairarapa with a background in property law. She is an Associate member of the New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives and joined WCM in 2017 as a member of Jo McDonald’s property team. She acts for clients on a wide variety of residential and commercial property sales and purchases, subdivision work, and refinancing matters.

She works between Wellington and the Wairarapa and outside of work she enjoys wine, reading, and living in the Wairarapa with her partner and two cats.

LINDSAY GRIBBEN - PRINCIPAL

Lindsay was a principal in Major Gooding & Partners from 1996 until WCM Legal and Major Gooding & Partners merged in April 2016. He is now a principal of the firm.

Lindsay worked in legal practices in Timaru ,Balclutha and Oamaru, and farmed on his own account near Rakaia during the late 1980's, before moving to the Wairarapa in 1996. 

Lindsay works out of the Masterton office and also services a large client base in the Eketahuna area. He practises primarily in all aspects of conveyancing (rural, domestic and commercial), trusts, succession planning, wills, estates and small businesses. He also advises the MDC on Hood Aerodrome matters.

Lindsay has four adult children and in August will become a grandparent for the first time. In his leisure time Lindsay enjoys gardening, cooking, travelling, and tending the livestock on his lifestyle block. A vintage tractor takes up a good part of one garage and he hopes to find time to restore this.

JASON CARRUTHERS - SENIOR SOLICITOR

Jason holds a Degree in Law together with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Otago. He was admitted to the Bar in 2009 and commenced practice in a boutique-size Law firm in Auckland, where he advised both SME’s and private clients on a range of commercial, property and litigation matters.

Jason joined WCM in August 2017 and works as part of our Greytown team undertaking a wide variety of work including business and commercial transactions with particular interest in insolvency, construction, and financing. In addition to his commercial practice, he has experience in advising
clients in a variety of property transactions.

ED COOKE - CONSULTANT AND NOTARY PUBLIC

Ed was a partner in the firm from 1970 to 2012He has not renewed his legal practising certificate, but remains in the firm as a Consultant, happy to talk to his former clients about their affairs if they wish.

Ed is a Notary Public, which enables him to certify documents for use in overseas countries.

Ed is married to Juliet, and they have three adult children: Merran, a Lawyer and professional oboist, Grayson, an Associate Professor of multi-media at Southern Cross University in Lismore, NSW, and Wendell, who is Film Censor and Film Maker. 

Ed’s outside interests include making string instruments (violins, violas and cello), tramping, and music. With Juliet, he organises and hosts house concerts for the Greytown Music Group.

Ed is available by appointment in the Greytown office.

 

JULIET COOKE - CONSULTANT

Juliet was a partner in the firm from 1989 to 2014.   She has now ceased to be a partner and director of WCM Legal, as she is working her way down towards retirement, and will not be renewing her legal practising certificate after June 2016She is now a Consultant, specialising in property matters, wills, and estates.

Juliet is married to Ed, and they have three adult children: Merran, a Lawyer and professional oboist, Grayson, an Associate Professor of multi-media at Southern Cross University in Lismore, NSW, and Wendell, who is Film Censor and Film Maker.

BRIDGET GRAY - ESTATES MANAGER

Bridget has worked for the legal profession since leaving secondary school, firstly in Wellington, and later, after returning to the Wairarapa to start a family, for two Masterton law firms.  She began working for WCM Legal in their Greytown office approximately 6 years ago, as PA to Juliet Cooke.  She continues in that role for Juliet, and also as the Estates Manager. 

She is married to Phil, has a son and daughter, and enjoys spending her leisure time with her family, working in her ever-evolving garden, walking in the Tararuas, and working on their farm block.
